The POA

There is just one (and a half) day left for Sankalp 2010 to get into action. The campus is all decked up, the stage awaits its actors and the Sankalp team (you can meet them here- http://tinyurl.com/33ftq7w) are working non-stop to make this not simply a theatre event, but a representation of the legacy that Sankalp is here at MICA.

The plans for the three days of drama are out, and in addition to the ’30 days in September’ we have a host of events lined up for you. So if you’re in and around Ahmedabad on those three days (3rd- 5th December in case you weren’t paying attention) we suggest you check out the schedule so you can modify yours! The Final Production…

Scheduled for all three days of the Sankalp Theatre Festival from 3rd to 5th December, the final production of our theatre group- 30 Days of September- promises to be everything Sankalp stands for- intense drama, cleverly crafted dialogue and spellbinding acting. It will be held at the prestigious Natrani theatre, treasured home of drama of the Sarabhai family and currently run by Mallika Sarabhai, on the banks of the Sabarmati river, and trust us when the lights shine down and the stage is set, the milieu of the amphitheatre is something other-worldly.

This years production is based on the play written by Mahesh Dattani. It revolves around the life of Mala Khatri, a troubled young woman battling the trauma of an abusive childhood, constantly bitter at her silently suffering mother. It sensitively handles the difficult subject of child sex abuse and skillfully weaves through thirty days of Mala’s tumultuous life, a life that tears her between Deepak, her fiancé and the man responsible for her broken state. Featuring only four characters, the play interweaves their lives and takes the audience through two hours of suspense and drama.

The tickets for the play will be on sale soon, and with the way the rehearsals are going, we know for a fact that the final show will not disappoint! For more details, contact -

Alumni @ Sankalp

Sankalp as an entity, is very close to all our hearts. Being the highly dramatic individuals each of us claim to be, we would be lost without this platform to vent out our creative frustrations and give shape to our ideas. In the same way, Sankalp is incredibly close to the alumni of Sankalp. Those that made it what it is today, giving its life a story, song a tune and giving the stage the performers. Our alumni have gone a long way in establishing themselves in both the corporate and creative spheres. We have had some famous plays staged by our alumni, and we are extremely proud to be associated with all of them.

And for all those skeptics who believe the twain of theatre and management must not meet, we give you two people and their dream project. Sunil Vishnu and Karthik Kumar, two MICA graduates and the guys that gave Sankalp its groove back, five years ago decided to leave their comfortable corporate lives and chase their dream of loving what they do. The result, their own Sankalp… through their entertainment entrepreneurship-  EVAM. Today, it is 7 years old and providing an outlet to the theatrically inclined nationwide, with more than 245 shows performed in 14 cities. More than just a theatre company they are a communication medium that furthers the causes of all the brands that they partner (Airtel, Standard Chartered Bank, TCS, HSBC, Royal Sundaram, Citibank, Durex, Nestle, Motorola, BPL, to name a few). MTV recently nominated Evam for the Pepsi and MTV Youth Icons contest in the Hottest Start-up and Young Entrepreneur categories. They were also one of the first theatre groups to have a trailer for their plays! This company, a definite pride of MICA, is the perfect example of how one can live off dreams and be recognised for it too.

One, two, three… GRƩƩK!

Greek is war. Greek is art. Greek is passion and hedonism. Greek is drama, and now Sankalp. In its 11th year of providing all theatrically inclined MICAN’s a stage, a prop, and a charter to exist so as to perform… Sankalp has brought back the classics and taken on the oldest story tellers to weave this new chapter in the epic that it is to all of us. Aided by the nine muses, bringing together music, poetry, songs, dancing, drama and culture, and blessed (yes, that’s what we believe) by the manic  eccentricity, free-willed ecstasy and divine comedy of Dionysus himself, we bring to you Greek traditions, Sankalp style with- ‘It’s All Greek to Me’.

While we have traditionally held the Sankalp festival as a theatre production with our central play held on three days, this year it is on a far grander scale with a theatre festival and related events in the morning followed by the labour of our greatest love (theatre)… our annual production, for three consecutive nights, held at Natarani.

Our days will be filled with one act plays, monologues, multi-act plays, street plays, radio plays, short films, evenings with our production and the late night/ early morning with some pretty cool informal events. This year we also invite theatre groups and drama clubs from all over India to participate in our festival and help us in making it the biggest confluence of theatrical talent and social ideas and thoughts. Registrations for all contests are now open at sankalp-mica.net. With our incredibly full roster of events there isn’t an aspect of theatre or acting that we haven’t got covered and if you have a latent actor, director, producer or even spot-boy in you… there’s no place you’d rather be than MICA this year on the 3rd, 4th and 5th of December.

Trust us on that.
